Great Books for Christian Kids
The Terrestria Chronicles are just fabulous. A young boy held captive by the evil master of the land (the devil) is set free by the one and only person who has the right to do so (Jesus.) In this series, full of adventure, your heart will grow as you watch the characters strive to love the Lord and serve Him wholeheartedly. Especially good for boys, we girls have thoroughly enjoyed them, too.
The Squire and the Scroll (along with The Princess and the Kiss – below) are the two books that have graced my shelves the longest. I have been reading and rereading these books to all my children from the time they were five or six. The Squire and the Scroll is a vivid allegory of putting on the Armor of God in order to overcome the evil of this world. The message is mighty for boys, but there is much to be learned by girls, too.
The Princess and the Kiss: A Story of God’s Gift of Purity is such a sweet and gentle picture of purity that is completely appropriate for all ages. Written from the perspective of the princess who saves herself for the “one”, boys can also glean much about their responsibilities in purity and treating ladies as they should be treated.
Jotham’s Journey: A Storybook for Advent is an action-packed, fictional story / devotional that follows the character’s life as he lives during the time of Jesus’ birth. One chapter a day is meant to be read through the Advent season – if you can keep yourself from reading ahead. This book (as well as Bartholomew’s Passage and Tabitha’s Travels) is just wonderful. Very intense at times, but wonderful for kids at least 8-10 years old.
With You All the Way is just a short picture book that can be read in a matter a minutes, but has a very powerful message that sticks with you for a long time. I simply cannot tell you more or I’ll give the whole thing away. You’ll want to read it for yourself for sure!
Coming Home is a picture book that I’ve read with middle school and high school kids because it’s so very good. Two boys are left on a dull island while their captain goes to prepare a place for them. The captain leaves specific instructions about where to go and who to know on the island. Disobeying those instructions could be disastrous…
A Parable about the King is a princess story. Who doesn’t love a good picture book about kings and princesses and their adventures? What’s better about this one, though, is that the king represents our Lord and the princess represents us. Guess what? He loves us a lot!
Twice Yours is a little book I found on a clearance rack many years ago. I have no idea why is was on clearance because the story is a wonderful picture of what Jesus was willing to pay in order to make us His…again. Great for young and old, this picture book can be read in just a few minutes.
The Hedge of Thorns is a Lamplighter book. Oh, Lamplighter, how I love thee! I would likely recommend just about any book they publish! I chose to include this one on our top 10 list for the simple reason that it’s the first Lamplighter book we ever read – and it’s powerful. When a town is given a safe road on which to travel that is edged with a hedge of thorns, what consequences might occur if the residents choose to take a different path?
Jonathan Park Adventures are not books, but I couldn’t help adding these audio adventures to our list. They are so, so good. Full of adventure, creation science, faith-building story lines and more, your family won’t be happy until you’ve purchased the entire series. At least that’s what happened at our house!
