Happy 2020 everyone! The new year often inspires us to make some changes to our decor. One of the easiest ways to keep a home looking fresh and current without breaking the bank is to incorporate a few new (or different) decorative accent pieces using popular colors and styles. This is the year to welcome more blue in and around our homes. *This post contains affiliate links.

In the interior design world we are going to be seeing a lot of blue, especially for spring and summer.

Pantone has named “Classic Blue” as the color of the year. Many other reputable paint and design companies have chosen similar colors.

So blue may be trending, but it truly is classic! Even if you aren’t ready for a long term color commitment with blue walls or wallpaper, just a few dishes or textiles can liven up any space.  Before long you will be singing that old jazzy classic, “…blue skies…smiling at me…” as you walk through your home.

While Pantone has named classic blue as the color of the year, it is likely we will also be seeing various shades of blue and ocean inspired tones popping up not only in interior design but in fashion as well.

When it comes to adding blue to your home for the first time, finding your inspiration can be an essential part of getting started. For example, if you are an ocean lover, concentrate on creating an easy, breezy coastal vibe by incorporating various shades of blue.

Better Homes and Gardens

If you have a small space that wouldn’t be costly to repaint or wallpaper, consider experimenting with blue walls to make a bold statement. If you are thinking of new wallpaper or paint, you might be able to save some money using Home Depot coupons.

Blue walls would look beautiful in an entry way with plenty of light. If you want to paint over a darker color but you are concerned about coverage, you can find plenty of info on how to repaint walls online.

The Creativity Exchange

While I am not one to conform to trends in interior design or fashion, I do like to keep my home and wardrobe looking refreshed by incorporating a few trendy pieces. I was a bit ahead on the color trend last summer when I used several blue and white accents in my summer decorating. For about two years I had been drawn to blue Chinoiserie china, blue transferware and blue toile du jouy fabric and started a small collection with thrifted pieces I had scored over the last couple of years on my junkin’ adventures.

While blue may be trending now it is anything but new. Classic blue ginger jars, Chinoiserie, Delft and blue and white transferware have been gracing stately homes and quaint cottages for centuries.

Since my home is neutral it is easy to make a design statement with just a bit of blue by using dishes, pottery and textiles as accents. If you are intimidated by too much blue, you can always keep things simple  by using just a few blue accessories.

“Bluebirds…singing a song…nothin’ but blue birds… all day long!” ( I can’t help myself! I am a choir teacher and I actually just started teaching Blue Skies to my choirs at school today so it’s stuck in my head!) I love the sweet blue Chinoserie style bird that I scored at Hobby Lobby last year for less than $2.00 during the 80% off end of spring clearance.

My tiny blue thrifted jars are perfect for cloche vignettes.

Even if your home isn’t neutral, no worries. Since blue is so classic you can simply add a blue accent piece or two such as a special dish, vase, or lamp without worrying about the colors competing or “clashing.”

While authentic blue and white Chinese pottery can be very expensive, there are many high quality  reproductions that can help you create a stylish look for a fraction of the price. All of my blue and white pieces have been thrifted for less than $10.00.

The great thing about decorating with blue dishes is that they will never go out of style, even when “classic blue” isn’t the “color of the year.”

If you aren’t a fan of blue and white Chinese pottery, just use a few blue textiles to easily refresh your home for 2020.

Of course there are plenty of other colors and interior design color schemes that will be trending in 2020 if blue just isn’t your cup of tea. After all, trends aren’t important! My decorating motto is “Surround yourself with the things you love!”

While I prefer a neutral decor scheme overall, I do think it is fun to play around with colorful accents from time to time. I will definitely add some classic French country/English traditional blue accents for spring and summer. I hope this post has inspired you a bit and maybe all the color  and decor inspiration will help you beat the “winter blues.” If you would like to add a little blue to your home in 2020, I have suggested some beautiful blue decorative items in my affiliate shopping section below.
