What is self-care, and why is it important?
Self-care is any activity that you consciously do in order to take care of your overall well being.
In order to live a beautiful life filled with happiness and love, you have to love and care for yourself. If you are someone who puts others first, you have to get in the habit of putting yourself first from time to time. It is awesome to be selfless but how can you give your best to others if you can’t even give the best to yourself? That’s right…you can’t! In order to give your best to others, you have to give the best to yourself; you must keep your ENTIRE being healthy and balanced! Your entire being means your physical body, your spiritual body, your emotions, your mind, your social life, and your sensory wellness; ALL these areas need to be shown love and care in order for them to communicate, connect, and function positively with each other!
6 areas of self-care
First and foremost, your physical well being is most important to take care of. Taking care of this area is pretty straightforward…simply, eat healthily and exercise daily. I know some of you are rolling your eyes at this area so let me explain why this is important. Your body loves you so much and it will work overtime to keep you alive and kicking even when you are not taking care of it…love and appreciate your body by giving it TLC! It is so important to show your body that you appreciate all it does and give it love by cleaning up your diet and keeping active.
Eat fresh fruit and vegetables while limiting junk food, this alone can balance hormones that affect your emotions and mood. Go outside for a 30-minute walk every day to improve positivity and strength. These are simple things you can do that will DRAMATICALLY change your physical health. The second area is emotional self-care; check in with yourself to work on and let go of negative emotions. It is not healthy for your physical and mental well-being to hold on to sadness and trauma. Pinpoint the source of trauma that is connected to any negative emotions that you’re holding on to and put in the work to let them go.
If you are not sure of the source of trauma, meditation is a great technique to help bring up anything buried deep inside your mind. Meditation will bring the source of trauma to the surface so that you can be consciously aware of it which brings you one step closer to healing as you will know EXACTLY what needs your attention. If you are not into meditation or what to be a little extra, journaling is a great way to help heal negative emotions. Keeping a journal to write down and release negative thoughts and emotions is a great therapeutic method as you are able to release and unload them without a filter. The following journal prompt will help tremendously when used with positive intentions.
In your journal, answer these 3 questions truthfully:
- What is the emotional block or the problem?
- Why can’t you move on and let it go?
- What do you need to do to heal?

The third area is spirituality, my favorite! Spirituality is your soul’s connection to something bigger than yourself and involves working toward inner peace and balance. Spiritualty focuses on finding peace and purpose within your life while balancing your energy to bring you clarity and positivity.
A simple way to reach spiritual enlightenment is by practicing meditation. Meditation is a mental exercise that strengthens your awareness, mindfulness and higher consciousness. Another way to achieve awakening is by practicing yoga. First and foremost, yoga is a mental, physical, and spiritual exercise. This exercise consists of low-impact physical activity such as holding postures called asanas, breathing techniques called pranayama, and meditation. The fourth area of self-care is intellectual. Keeping your mind active is essential for improving and maintaining memory and cognitive functioning. Keeping an active mind maintains a sharp memory, reduces the chance of dementia, and aids in depression. Some ideas of intellectual self-care are: reading a book, learning a new language or subject, and watching a documentary, etc…
The fifth area is social self-care. Without positive and durable relationships, both your mind and body can fall apart. It is vital to have relationships and bonds with others that you can go to for comfort in stressful times. Having a social life no matter how small makes a huge difference in your mental health as being around others who are positive will uplift you. Once a week make a date with a friend to grab a cup of coffee or join a group hobby class to meet people with similar interests!
Social self-care also means you need to let go of people who do not serve a positive purpose in your life. Open your eyes to discover shitty people in your life that don’t deserve to be there and cut the fucking cord!
The last area of self-care is sensory. In sensory self-care, nourish what you see, smell, touch, and hear. Do something nice for yourself like buying yourself flowers, burning your favorite candle, watching your favorite movie, getting your nails done, and whatever else makes you happy! Basically, TREAT YO SELF!!!
Once you take care of and balance all 6 of these areas you will feel like a boss ass bitch!
